Racing Classes Explained

The true appeal of Tamiya's Mini 4WD can be found in racing them. Unfortunately, there isn't a formal set of rules and regulations that every track follows, however I will be posting the ones that our local track, DukWho Workshop, uses. You may want to check with your local track to see what they use prior to racing.

Box Stock Class

Mini 4WD Rules - Box Stock Class

The Box Stock class is where most beginners start out. It's a fun, rewarding class that helps you learn how to build an efficient car.

Additional Notes:
• Must use stock kit only and the parts included in that kit.
• You are not required to use all of the parts in the kit, ie, no rear wing, canopy cover, etc.
• No extra parts (outside of what's included) or parts swapping is allowed.
• Must use the gears that came in the kit.
• No body modifications allowed.
• Minimum of 2 decals on the body (or paint) is required.
• GT Animal kits are allowed to change the motor to a stock-class motor.
• Kits that are not allowed: Starter Pack Series, EVO.1 Series, Zenquish Progress, Azente Progress, Advanced Pack

Basic Class

Mini 4WD Rules - Basic Class

A step up from the Box Stock Class, the Basic Class allows you to start the tuning journey with some budget modifications.

Additional Notes:
• Any Tamiya non-modified chassis allowed
• Body must be Plastic, no polycarbonate shells allowed.
• Upgrade motors allowed - Rev-Tuned, Atomic-Tuned, Torque-Tuned and Light-Dash.
• Plastic, FRP and aluminum stays are allowed (no carbon fiber). No cutting, trimming, sanding or modifying of any parts allowed.
• Any exposed screw heads (under the chassis) must be covered using brake pads or Tamiya-only tapes. Rubber tubing or plastic balls must cover any exposed screw heads/threads on the top of the chassis (or stays).
• Any Tamiya tires are allowed, however tire shaving, sanding or truing is not.
• No wheel piercing, parts countersinking or enlarging holes allowed.
• No springs or gimmicks are allowed.
• Tamiya Basic Class tuning sets or starter kits are recommended but not required.
• All off-the-shelf Tamiya Mass Dampers are allowed.

Tuned Class

Mini 4WD Rules - Tuned Class

The Tuned Class is for racers that are ready to take the next step in tuning. This class is great for learning about speed and handling of your Mini 4WD vehicle.

Additional Notes:
• Any Tamiya non-modified chassis allowed.
• Polycarbonate bodies with custom mounting (ie, hammer bodies) are allowed.
• Upgrade motors allowed - Rev-Tuned, Atomic-Tuned and Torque-Tuned.
• All Tamiya plate parts allowed, including carbon fiber. No cutting, trimming, sanding or modifying of any parts allowed (however countersinking lower screws is and highly recommended).
• Any exposed, non-countersunk screw heads (under the chassis) must be covered using brake pads or Tamiya-only tapes. Rubber tubing or plastic balls must cover any exposed screw heads/threads on the top of the chassis (or stays).
• Any Tamiya tires are allowed, however tire shaving, sanding or truing is not.
• Wheel piercing, parts countersinking or enlarging holes allowed.
• Springs, no-cut gimmicks and systems are allowed. Must be original Tamiya parts.
• Ball bearings and aluminum rollers allowed.

BMAX Class

Mini 4WD Rules - BMAX Class

The BMAX Class is the stepping stone to pure performance! These cars are blisteringly fast with just one minor rule that keeps them from being an all-out race car.

Additional Notes:
• Any Tamiya non-modified chassis allowed.
• Polycarbonate bodies allowed, no custom mounting.
• The entire range of upgrade motors is allowed, all the way up to Sprint Dash.
• All Tamiya plate parts allowed, including carbon fiber. No cutting, trimming, sanding or modifying of any parts allowed (however countersinking lower screws is and highly recommended).
• Any exposed, non-countersunk screw heads (under the chassis) must be covered using brake pads or Tamiya-only tapes. Rubber tubing or plastic balls must cover any exposed screw heads/threads on the top of the chassis (or stays).

Advanced Class

Mini 4WD Rules - Advanced Class

The Advanced Class - the class designed for the cream-of-the-crop racers! Basically, these cars are BMAX cars that allow custom mounting (ie, hammer bodies). For serious racers only!

• Any Tamiya non-modified chassis allowed.
• Polycarbonate bodies with custom mounting (ie, hammer bodies) are allowed.
• The entire range of upgrade motors is allowed, all the way up to Sprint Dash.
• All Tamiya plate parts allowed, including carbon fiber. No cutting, trimming, sanding or modifying of any parts allowed (however countersinking lower screws is and highly recommended).
